Job Summary:
The Art Librarian is responsible for managing and organizing the art collection within the library, providing specialized research assistance to library patrons, and promoting art-related resources and services. This role requires a deep understanding of library and information science principles, as well as expertise in the field of art librarianship. The Art Librarian will collaborate with other library staff members to ensure effective collection development, user engagement, and the delivery of exceptional library services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Manage and curate the art collection, including cataloging, classifying, and organizing art materials, such as books, journals, digital resources, and multimedia.
2. Develop and implement acquisition strategies to enhance the art collection, ensuring it supports the research and teaching needs of library patrons.
3. Provide expert reference and research assistance to library users, including faculty, students, and community members, guiding them in their art-related information needs.
4. Collaborate with academic departments and faculty to support art-related curriculum, research projects, and exhibitions.
5. Promote the art collection, services, and resources through outreach activities, presentations, and workshops, both within the library and across campus.
6. Stay updated on emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in art librarianship, and apply them to improve library services and operations.
7. Develop and maintain relationships with art-related organizations, artists, galleries, and museums to facilitate resource sharing and collaborative projects.
8. Assist in designing and implementing library policies, procedures, and guidelines related to the art collection and services.
9. Participate in library committees and meetings to contribute to overall library planning, decision-making, and policy development.
10. Collaborate with other library staff members to ensure seamless integration of art-related resources and services with other library departments.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution, with a specialization in Art Librarianship.
2. Strong knowledge of library cataloging standards, metadata schemas, and classification systems, such as AACR2, RDA, LC Classification, and MARC21.
3. In-depth understanding of art history, art research methodologies, and art-related information resources.
4. Familiarity with emerging technologies and digital tools used in art librarianship, such as art databases, digital repositories, and image management systems.
5. Excellent research skills and ability to assist library users in navigating art-related databases, online catalogs, and research platforms.
6. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, students, and artists.
7. Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
8. Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues related to art collections and digital resources.
9. Commitment to providing exceptional customer service and user-centered library experiences.
10. Previous experience or coursework in a library setting, particularly in art libraries, is preferred.
